BIOGRAPHY & ORIGINS
Training and first steps in flamenco dance
Abel Harana is a flamenco dancer born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz. He began training at a very young age with teachers such as José Antonio Benítez, a member of Antonio Gades’s company, and Ana María López in Jerez de la Frontera. He later broadened his knowledge with Joaquín Grilo, Manolo Marín and Eduardo Serrano “El Güito”.
His artistic curiosity also took him to Madrid, where he continued his training through courses taught by Domingo Ortega, Antonio Reyes and La China, among others. At 18 he won first prize for dance at the national competition “Noches de Bajo de Guía”, performing soleá and seguiriyas.
During this period he gained experience in renowned tablaos in Madrid, Barcelona and Seville, such as Corral de la Pacheca, Las Tablas, Al-Ándalus, Tablao Cordobés, the Tablao de Carmen Amaya and El Arenal.
Companies, shows and choreography
Throughout his career he has been part of the companies of Rafael de Córdoba, José Porcel, María Pagés, Pepa Montes and Ricardo Miño. With the latter he had the opportunity to premiere his own choreography at the Seville Flamenco Biennial, at the Teatro Lope de Vega.
He has also been a member of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía under the direction of Cristina Hoyos, and has performed as a guest artist alongside flamenco pianist Pedro Ricardo Miño at festivals in Belgium, Luxembourg and Mont-de-Marsan.
In 2010, together with dancer Patricia Ibáñez, he premiered the show “Memoria Antigua” at the 14th Jerez Festival, playing to a full house and earning excellent reviews. He later took the production on tour in the United States, performing at venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Duke University in North Carolina.
